JD Birds: AvianHealth

Avian Health

  • Learn your bird's regular habits. If your bird acts or looks different (e.g. listless, fluffed at the bottom of cage, nostril discharge, irregular droppings) see an avian vet immediately

  • Bathe your bird at least once a week in a pan of shallow water, in the shower, or mist them with a spray bottle. Make it a fun event

  • Have a annual well-bird exam by a reputable avian vet. A thorough well-bird exam will include cultures, blood work and an overall physical examination

  • Regularly groom your bird (approximately 4 times a year) by clipping nails and flight feathers. If you are uncomfortable having this done, seek out a qualified avian groomer. Many vets will groom your bird buddies during a basic examination

  • All birds need at least 10hrs of UNINTERRUPTED, dark quiet, sleep in their cages nightly. If your bird is misbehaving, lack of proper sleep could be the problem

  • Birds need vigorous exercise and time out of their cages daily

  • Birds are VERY sensitive to fumes. NEVER use non-stick cookware the self-clean setting on your oven. Paint fumes, cigarette smoke, household cleaning agents, scented candles and aerosols can kill your feathered friend

  • Keep your bird away from toxic plants, and keep a list of bird safe plants handy.

  • Bathe your bird at least once a week in a pan of shallow water, in the shower, or mist them with a spray bottle. Make it a fun event

  • NEVER leave your bird unsupervised with children, dogs, cats, ferrets, reptiles or other pets
